In this entry of our “Spotlight on…” mini-series, where we shine a light on individuals in a team, we speak to Emma Hughes, a solicitor in our Personal Injury & Criminal Negligence team. She shares her path into the profession, life in North Wales, and what she enjoys about working at Gamlins Law.
Background and Motivation
What first brought you into your area of law, and what keeps you interested in it?
When I first joined Gamlins after law school, I started in the personal injury and clinical negligence department. I was fortunate to work closely with an excellent senior solicitor and her secretary, who worked brilliantly together and made me feel part of the team straight away.
They supported me throughout my training contract and helped me develop both my practice and a genuine interest in personal injury and clinical negligence. I quickly realised how important this area of law can be for people whose lives have been seriously affected by injury or poor medical care.
Connection to North Wales
What’s your connection to North Wales, and what do you enjoy most about working here?
I was raised in North Wales and am a fluent Welsh speaker. Having that connection to the area is important to me, particularly when working with clients from the local community.
Is there a particular place, walk or hidden gem in the region you always recommend to people?
Snowdonia is always my recommendation. It is such a special part of North Wales, with incredible scenery and so many different places to explore.
Work and expertise
What’s the most rewarding part of your job day to day?
The most rewarding part of my job is being able to help and guide clients whose lives have often been disrupted by an accident or medical negligence.
The claims process can feel daunting, especially when someone is already dealing with the physical, emotional and practical impact of what has happened. Being able to support clients through that process and help them understand their options is a very important part of the work.
Life at Gamlins
What made you choose Gamlins, and what has kept you here?
I recently returned to Gamlins because I wanted to come back to a wider variety of work. The firm has always been welcoming and supportive, and that has remained very much the same since my return.
Just for fun…
What’s something you’re passionate about outside work?
Travel. I enjoy seeing new places, experiencing different cultures and having the opportunity to properly switch off outside work.
