In this entry of our “Spotlight on…” mini-series, where we shine a light on individuals in a team, we speak to Shauna Bland , a Paralegal in our Private Client team. She shares her path into the profession, life in North Wales, and what she enjoys about working at Gamlins Law.
Background & motivation
What first brought you into your area of law, and what keeps you interested in it?
I chose law as I have always wanted to be able to help people through vulnerable times in their lives. Originally, when I was applying to university, I wanted to study medicine, but soon found out I wasn’t wired to deal with the sciences.
Dealing with Wills and Probate, you are exposed to both the realities of clients needing a helping hand when somebody close has passed away, and wanting to ensure that their loved ones are being cared for should something happen to them. Being able to provide a service for people experiencing these emotions and being able to soothe their worries by taking a weight off their shoulders is really rewarding. It is a reminder of why I chose law in the first place.
What’s something about your career path that might surprise people?
As I have to read through many documents with many clients on a day-to-day basis, I have developed the skill of reading upside down! Not very handy in day-to-day life but a big, unexpected help in work!
Who or what had the biggest influence on the direction you’ve taken?
When I was a young teenager, I had to attend court to testify against somebody who had wronged my friends and me. Being in that environment and going through that experience was very eye-opening to me. Watching the proceedings was fascinating and since then, a career in law had always been at the back of mind.
My family and my partner have been there to support me through the many years studying and exams that come as part of the job. I can’t thank them enough.
Connection to North Wales
What’s your connection to North Wales, and what do you enjoy most about working here?
I was born and raised in North Wales, and I have lived here my whole life. I have always wanted a way to give back to my community and feel as though it’s important to stay connected to my roots.
Is there a particular place, walk or hidden gem in the region you always recommend to people?
Colwyn Bay promenade. I grew up in the next village along, and I spent many of my summers practically living at the beach.
Work & expertise
What part of your work do people often misunderstand until they see it up close?
The amount of work that we do in the background. I think a lot of people only see the final product that we present to them when the matter comes to an end. To do what we do and to get to that point takes a lot – whether it be early mornings or time spent outside of working hours preparing to get things right.
In addition, the studying we all must do to be able to advise our clients, and the practice that it takes to be able to draft a document cannot be learnt overnight. Our learning is never over and working in practice keeps you on your toes.
Is there a recent change or trend in your area of law that you think people should know about?
AI is now a huge part of many areas of the law, it can be a blessing, but it is essential that it’s not overused.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job day to day?
Seeing my clients leave with a smile on their face. Knowing that I’ve made someone laugh or smile when they are in a difficult situation is amazing, hopefully giving them a moment of light at a tough time.
Life at Gamlins
What made you choose Gamlins, and what has kept you here?
Gamlins is the biggest firm in the area and has a very long history of great reputation so when I was offered my position, I was thrilled. The firm is busy, but the job is very rewarding and the experience I have gained here is second to none.
What has kept me here are my lovely colleagues, and the friends that I have made within the company who – whether they like it or not – are lifelong!
What’s something about the team culture that people might not see from the outside?
Gamlins is a very friendly firm. All of our staff are approachable and committed to reaching the best solution for anyone that walks through the front door. There is a great work-life balance, and it is a relaxed work environment which is crucial in a career like ours.
Which colleague has taught you something valuable, and what was it?
My team in our Rhyl office are invaluable to me. My supervisor, Ben Talbot and our secretary, Heather Conde are my backbones, and I couldn’t be without them. They have taught me countless lessons, and I am forever thankful for their help.
Just for fun
What’s something you’re passionate about outside work?
I am a big reader; I love a good book! I am also a huge lover of music. If I could go to see live music every day of the week I would.
If you weren’t doing this job, what else could you see yourself doing?
If I wasn’t in law, I could see myself doing something in the medical field. I have always had an interest in things like autopsies, so maybe a technician in that field, if I could pass the exams. My dream job is to become a coroner, so I feel as though this would point me in the right direction.
Favorite local spot for lunch?
If I’m being honest, Morrisons for their salad bar – it can’t be beat!
