Our “Spotlight on…” mini-series shines a light on some of the great people we have here in our team at Gamlins Law.
Through this short series of profiles, we’ll be sharing more about our team members, including their backgrounds and what drew them into law, as well as what they enjoy about working at Gamlins.
This month we caught up with Kaleem Choudhry to talk about his route into litigation, what brought him to Gamlins, and his experience of balancing life as a solicitor with Ramadan.
What first brought you into your area of law, and what keeps you interested in it?
It was more by coincidence than anything planned. I have a background in business and economics, so I was initially drawn to commercial law. But after working in Dispute Resolution as a paralegal and trainee, I found I really enjoyed helping clients resolve problems. It also covers a wide range of issues, which keeps things varied day to day.
What’s something about your career path that might surprise people?
As part of my undergraduate degree at the University of Manchester, I spent a year studying abroad in Jordan.
What’s your connection to North Wales, and what do you enjoy most about working here?
I was born and raised in North Wales, so it’s good to be able to practise law at a high level while staying close to home.
Favourite local spot for lunch?
Lucky’s!
What part of your work do people often misunderstand until they see it up close?
Many people assume most cases end up in court. In reality, our role is to act in the client’s best interests within the court rules, which often means resolving matters before they ever get that far.
Is there a recent change or trend in your area of law that you think people should know about?
Like most areas, AI is starting to have an impact.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job day to day?
Helping clients reach the outcome they’re looking for. A lot of people come to us feeling stressed or frustrated, whether they’re bringing or defending a claim. If you can ease that pressure and guide them through it, that can matter just as much as the final result.
What made you choose Gamlins, and what has kept you here?
Gamlins has a strong reputation in the region and offers the chance to work on a wide range of matters. It also helps that you’re working alongside good people.
What’s something about the team culture that people might not see from the outside?
There’s a real focus on wellbeing. There are expectations, of course, but there’s also a clear understanding that people need a balance.
On Ramadan…
Is there a part of Ramadan that you think people would be surprised by if they understood it better?
It’s not just about fasting. It’s also about giving to charity and understanding what less fortunate people deal with every day.
What’s the biggest misconception you come across about what Ramadan actually involves?
That you can still drink water during the day.
How do you manage Ramadan alongside the demands of working in law, and has the firm been supportive?
You take each day as it comes and adapt. The firm has been supportive and has made an effort to understand and accommodate where they can.
Do you find colleagues are more curious about it now than they might have been a few years ago?
Yes, awareness has definitely grown. More people understand it now, including some of the health benefits.
What’s the first thing you eat when you break your fast at the end of the day?
Dates.
