This week sees us launching a new mini-series, shining a light on some of the fantastic people we have at Gamlins Law.
Through this short series of profiles, we’ll be sharing more about our team members, including their background and what drew them into law, as well as what they enjoy about working at Gamlins.
We’d like to start with Andy Hutchinson, whose interesting story and career journey you can explore below.
What first brought you into your area of law, and what keeps you interested in it?
I worked in heavy industry before being diagnosed with a blood disorder. I was advised to leave that line of work, so I retrained and have now been a criminal lawyer for 30 years. Working as an advocate keeps you sharp. No two days are ever the same.
What’s something about your career path that might surprise people?
I left school at 15 with no qualifications and went straight into the coal industry as an underground miner. After my diagnosis I changed direction, did my law degree, secured a training contract and have been practising criminal law ever since.
Who or what had the biggest influence on the direction you’ve taken?
My family. They backed me all the way, even though I had two young children at the time.
What’s your connection to North Wales, and what do you enjoy most about working here?
I was born in Rhyl and still live here. I’ve never wanted to live anywhere else.
Is there a particular place, walk or hidden gem in the region you always recommend to people?
Snowdon, and the beaches along the North Wales coast.
What part of your work do people often misunderstand until they see it up close?
People often ask how I can represent “criminals”. Once we sit down and talk, I can explain my role and why everyone is entitled to proper representation.
Is there a recent change or trend in your area of law that you think people should know about?
Almost everything has moved to digital systems, from disclosure to court procedures to police station work. Many clients struggle to understand how different the process is now.
What’s the most rewarding part of your job day to day?
Knowing you’ve represented someone to the best of your ability.
What made you choose Gamlins, and what has kept you here?
It’s a growing, forward-thinking practice with a strong reputation across North Wales.
What’s something about the team culture that people might not see from the outside?
Our criminal department is very close. We support each other, talk problems through and share knowledge.
Which colleague has taught you something valuable, and what was it?
A former colleague once told me: “Everyone has a story to tell, so always give them a way out.” I’ve kept that in mind throughout my career.
What’s something you’re passionate about outside work?
Dog walking, football and spending time with my family.
If you weren’t doing this job, what else could you see yourself doing?
I’d love to be a stonemason.
Favourite local spot for lunch?
A good country pub.
If you could instantly master a new skill, what would it be?
Oil painting.
